Technique • The form and keying style that a typist uses while operating the keyboard.
Touch-Method • To key by touch rather than by the hunt-and-peck method.
Posture • The way the typist sits; the way the typist’s arms, wrists, fingers, and legs and feet are placed.
WORK AREA • The arrangement of the keyboard, copy, mouse, and other materials on the desk.
ALPHABETIC KEYS • Letter keys on the keyboard.
ENTER/RETURN • Used to move the cursor down a line.
Gwam • GWAM (Gross Words a Minute) is the number of keystrokes a typist can make in a timed period.
Qwerty keyboard • The most commonly used keyboard arrangement.
Space bar • Used to insert spaces between characters.
accuracy • The ability to key text without errors.
Timed writing • Typing copy for a timed period in order to figure your GWAM rate.
Standard keyboarding word • Five characters or any combination of five characters and spaces.
How to Determine keyboarding gwam • Type for a specific number of minutes (timed writing) as directed by your teacher. • Determine the number of standard keyboarding words you keyed. • Remember: Every five strokes (characters and spaces) count as one word. • Divide the total number of words keyed by the number of minutes that you were timed.
Figuring gwam fora one-minute timed writing • If you typed 40 strokes (characters) in one minute, you would take 40/5 = 8 GWAM
Figuring gwam fora Two-minute timed writing • If you typed 40 strokes (characters) in two minutes, you would take (40/5) ÷ 2 = 4 GWAM
Figuring gwam fora Three-minute timed writing • If you typed 300 strokes (characters) in three minutes, you would take (300/5) ÷ 3 = 20 GWAM
Figuring ToTaL Strokes For a One-Minute Timed Writing From gwam • If you typed 20 GWAM in one minute, you would take (20 *5) = 100 Strokes
Figuring ToTaL Strokes For a Two-Minute Timed Writing From gwam • If you typed 90 GWAM in two minutes, you would take (90 *5) ÷ 2 = 225 Strokes
