  6. Sections Newspapers are divided up into section according to a readers interest. Some sections are: • Sports • Entertainment • Business • Local & International News • Science & Technology • Weather • And more…….

  7. Columns • A newspaper is divided up into small areas called columns. This is where the content is added. • A column refers to a newspaper’s layout (design) and is done is rectangular sections.

  8. 6 Common Ways to Place a Newspaper Ad • Classified • Spotlight • Business Card • Circular • Display • Spandeas Each Format is Found in a Different Location

  9. Activity 1: Newspaper Familiarization • Take a newspaper (one at a time) and look for some advertisements. Find some good and bad ones. • Pick out 3 or 4 advertisements that stand out to you (funny, silly, dumb, attractive, etc.) and cut them out. • On a piece of paper, I want you to write down its format and placement. Then write down a couple of sentences about why you chose it.

Activity 2: Think-Pair-Share • In groups of two I want you to take turns talking about your advertisements. • Each person will introduce their ad and receive comments from the other person about their ad. 1) Format, 2) Placement, 3) Preferences • The point is to understand other peoples opinions on advertising and how we can better… • Get attention • Give information • Motivate a purchase • Generate sales
