Our Fascinating Solar System EDCI 270 By: Kristen Lothamer
Target Audience • Elementary education students • Grades 4 to 6 • Ages 8 to 11
Learning Environment • In a classroom setting • A computer with audio is necessary
Objectives With this PowerPoint presentation, students should be able to answer all quiz questions that concern the information about the Solar System in the PowerPoint presentation with 80% accuracy.
Pay Attention! • It is important to pay attention and follow alongthroughout the PowerPoint presentation • There will be a fun quiz at the end of the presentation • You will receive a shining star for every right answer!
The Solar System • There are 8 planets that all revolve around the center of the Solar System, the Sun • The following pictures show the order of the Solar System:
The Brilliant Sun • The center of the Solar System • A medium-sized star • All 8 planets revolve around the sun
The Brilliant Sun • Glows like fire due to a nuclear reaction • Contains 98% of all the mass, or rocks, dust, and gas in the Solar System
Mercury • If you weighed 70 pounds on Earth, you would only weigh 27 poundson Mercury because it’s smaller and has less gravity • Extremely hot by day and freezing by night
Mercury • Has craters and basins • The surface is wrinkled because as the core cooled, it contracted and shrunk
Venus • Since the sun’s heat is trapped in the surface of Venus, it has the hottest average temperature • With volcanoes, Venus quakes, mountains and valleys, it’s very similarto Earth
Venus • Too hot for life • Every few 100 million years, the surface melts to an ocean of lava
Incorrect, Here’s Why … Venus is actually the hottest planet on average in the Solar System. This is way too hot to have life on the planet. Try Again!
Correct! • Venus is quite similar to Earth in many ways • One similarity is theviolent quakes on both planets
Incorrect, Here’s Why … Venus is the second planet from the Sun. There are a total of eight planets that orbit the Sun. Try Again!
Earth • The planet that we all live on! • The onlyplanet in the Solar System known to have life
Earth • A perfect temperature, weather, and atmosphere for life • Has one moon named Luna
Mars • Much like Mercury, your weight would reduce a great deal due to the weakergravitational pull • Mild temperament is more like Earth than anyother
Mars • Once had flowing rivers, streams, lakes, and even an ocean • Today, the only water on Mars is frozen or underground
Jupiter • The great red spot is where a giant storm has been raging for at least 300 years • Storm covers a larger surface than Earth!
Jupiter • Has no solid surface • Under its atmosphere is a large liquid ocean of hydrogen and water
Incorrect, Here’s Why … Jupiter has an enormous storm that has been raging on this planet for over 300 years! Try Again!
Incorrect, Here’s Why … Jupiter is actually the fourth farthestplanet from the Sun out of the eight planets that orbit the Sun. Try Again!
Correct! • Jupiter’s entire surface contains no solids • Under its atmosphere is a large liquid ocean
Saturn • Has beautiful rings that are 169,800 miles wide • Similar to Jupiter but is much smaller
Saturn • Clouds are made of methane and helium • Sky is a giant ocean of liquid chemicals
Uranus • Spins on its side because of a huge collision many years ago • Almost identical to Neptune
Uranus • Has a large rocky core • Could contain trillions of large diamonds
Incorrect, Here’s Why … Uranus is the farthest planet out of the eight planets that orbit the Sun! Try Again!
Correct! • Uranus and Neptune are quite alike • They are both very farfrom the Sun and have similar characteristics
Incorrect, Here’s Why … Uranus does not spin upside down, but instead it spins on its sidedue to a collision. Try Again!
Neptune • Has 6 rings which circle the planet • Giant storm called The Great Dark Spotrages much like Jupiter's storm
Neptune • Since it is very far away, many people did not know it existed • It was discovered by Johanne Galle and Heinrich D’ Arrest in 1846
Try This! • Research the Solar System and you favorite planet to learn more about it • Make a paper mache1 figure of your favorite planet • Make a diorama2 of the Solar System 1 http://www.wikihow.com/Make-Papier-Mache-Planets 2 http://www.ecerp.org/ecerp/space/dp573.htm
Quiz Time! • Are you read for the quiz? • If so, click the forward arrow • If not, click the menu button and review the material again
Quiz Directions • The quiz will be 9 questions and multiple choice • Click the answer that you think is correct
Correct! • Even though the sun compared to other stars is medium sized, it’s huge • About 1,300,000Earth’s could fit inside the Sun!
Incorrect, Here’s Why … The Sun actually contains 98% of the mass or rocks, dust, and gas in the Solar System Try Again!
Incorrect, Here’s Why … The 8 planets in the Solar System revolve around the Sun. The Sun does not revolve around the planets. Try Again!
Incorrect, Here’s Why … Mercury has a wrinkled surface because its massive iron core cools and contracts. As the core shrinks, the surface becomes wrinkled. Try Again!
Correct! • Mercury is full of craters and basins and therefore looks a lot like our moon • Scientists once thought it acted like the moon but actually it’s much different
Incorrect, Here’s Why … Life would not be possible on Mercury. It is way too hotby day and way too coldby night. Try Again!
Incorrect, Here’s Why … Both Earth and Venus have volcanoes, Earth or Venus quakes, mountains, and valleys Try Again!
