CONTAINING Soviet Expansion • WWII left many countries in Europe unstable • As a result, many countries in Eastern Europe became Communist satellites of the Soviet Union • Truman Doctrine: President declared that the U.S. would oppose and CONTAIN the spread of communism • Marshall Plan: Economic aid to struggling European countries to repair after WWII

BERLIN AIRLIFT Soviet Bear • After WWII, Germany is divided between the democratic nations of Great Britain, France, U.S. (West Germany) and communist Soviet Union (East Germany) • 1948: Soviet Union set up a blockade around Berlin – would not let any supplies in or out • Allies sent planes to drop supplies to the people of Berlin Divided Germany
