  3. What is Manifest Destiny? The U.S. government , President Polk, and its citizens believed that the nation’s destiny or fate was to expand westward from sea to sea. (Pacific Ocean) • “ the right of our manifest destiny to overspread and to possess the whole of the continent which Providence has given us for the development of the great experiment of liberty and federated self-government entrusted to us.“ • John O’Sullivan

  8. Louisiana Purchase • Result: 1803- Thomas Jefferson purchased Louisiana Territory from France for $15 million. It doubled the size of our country.

Louisiana Purchase1803 • Lewis and Clark were chosen by Jefferson to explore the area. • It took 18 months and nearly 4,000 miles. • New animals and species of plants were discovered as well as new geography information-rivers, mountains. • Sacagawea, a Native American woman helped Lewis and Clark across the wilderness.

  13. Annexation of Texas • Result: Texas asked to become part of the U.S. but was told by Mexico that war would be declared if they were annexed. • The United States annexed Texas into the U.S.

  15. Oregon Country • Result: President James Polk settled the Oregon boundary dispute. He made an agreement with Britain to make the northern border of Oregon the 49th Parallel.

  19. The Oregon Trail Approximately 2,200 miles long starting from Independence, Missouri. Later other trails were created to further travel in other directions. Travelers were inspired by dreams of gold and new farmland. The trail was created by fur trappers and traders. Later improvements to the trails would be better roads, ferries, bridges, and cut outs for mountains. The trails were used by an estimated 350,000 settlers. However, when railroads were completed then the need for trails was lessened.

Mexico loses and in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo the U.S. receives California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, and parts of Colorado, and Wyoming. • Border will be Rio Grande • Recognized the annexation of Texas • In exchange we paid them $15 million. .
