How do Cells Obtain Energy? • Cells of all organisms use energy to carry out the chemical activities that allow them to live, grow, and reproduce. • Plants are able to capture light energy from the sun and change it into food through a process called photosynthesis. • The food that plants make supply them with energy and also becomes a source of energy for the organisms that will eat the plants.
What do you need for Photosynthesis? PHOTOSYNTHESIS
Water from the soil PHOTOSYNTHESIS The sun Carbon dioxide from the air A plant
PHOTOSYNTHESIS What does photosynthesis make?
PHOTOSYNTHESIS Oxygen (waste) Food for plant (sugar)
PHOTOSYNTHESIS sugar water + Carbon dioxide + Oxygen

PHOTOSYNTHESIS Where does photosynthesis take place?
PHOTOSYNTHESIS vacuole Cell wall nucleus Cell membrane Chloroplasts!!! Plant Cell
Where Does Photosynthesis Take Place? • Chlorophyll in the chloroplasts capture the sun’s energy. • Carbon Dioxide enters the plant through small openings called stomata on the underside of leaves.
Why is this important to us? • We cannot make our own food - so we must get our food from plants. • Plants are the first step in the food chain. • http://www.ecokids.ca/pub/eco_info/topics/frogs/chain_reaction/assets/flash/chain_reaction.swf • The oxygen released during photosynthesis is necessary for all living things.

Getting Energy from Food • The food that you eat has to be broken down so that the energy that it contains can be changed into a form that your cells can use. • Most organisms use cellular respiration to obtain energy from food. • In eukaryotic cells, cellular respiration takes place in the mitochondria

Fermentation • Does NOT use oxygen • This is how cells get energy when they cannot get the oxygen they need for cellular respiration • Ex: Burning feeling you get in leg muscles = lactic acid build up (made during fermentation)
