CROSS SECTIONAL STUDY TO FIND OUT PREVALANCE OF CHRONIC LUNG DISORDER, ABNORMAL PFT AND ITS CORRELATION WITH DURATION OF EXPOSURE TO CARBAN MONOXIDE GAS & COHB IN EMPLOYEES WORKING AT COKE OVEN TOP AND COKE BAY AT SAIL,BSL. DR. B. B. LAL DR. R. KUMAR MR. S. PANDAY BOKARO STEEL PLANT
WHY THIS TOPIC • COKE OVEN EMITS MANY NOXIOUS GASES INCLUDING CARBON MONOXIDE (TLV = 50 ppm) • EMPLOYEES WORKING AT OVEN TOP & COKE BAY HAVING MAXIMUM EXPOSURE. • CARBON MONOXIDE IS KNOWN TOXIC GAS AFFECTING LUNGS AND OTHER VITAL ORGANS. • THUS IT WAS CHOOSEN FOR THE STUDY. “WHETHER THERE IS ANY CO-RELATION BETWEEN CO GAS EXPOSURE & CHRONIC LUNG DISORDER”
AIMS TO FIND OUT WHETHER THERE IS ANY SINGNIFICANT RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN DURATION OF EXPOSURE OF CARBON MONOXIDE AND CARBOXY HAEMOGLOBIN AND THE SAME WITH ABNORMAL PULMONARY FUNCTION TEST.
MATERIAL AND METHODS • RETRIEVAL & ANALYSIS OF HOSPITAL AND OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH DATA’S. • QUESTIONNIER SURVEY. • BREATH ANALYSIS FOR CO GAS IN THREE SHIFTS WITH RANDOM SAMPLING. • ON SITE CLINICAL EVALUATION.
EXCLUSION CRITERIA • HISTORY OF SMOKING. • PAST & RECENT HISTORY OF CHEST INFECTION. • CARDILOGICAL DISORDERS. • NEUROLOGICAL DISORDERS.
CONCLUSION STUDY INDICATES : • THERE IS A SIGNIFICANT CORRELATION BETWEEN LEVEL OF CO IN BREATH AND DURATION OF GAS EXPOSURE IN COKE OVEN. • THERE IS A SIGNIFICANT INCREASE IN LEVEL OF COHB IN BLOOD WITH DURATION OF GAS EXPOSURE . • ABNORMAL PFT HAS LESS OR NEGLIGIBLE CORRELATION WITH CO & COHB. • FURTHER DETAILED STUDY IS REQUIRED TO CONFIRM THE CONCLUSION.
RECOMMENDATION • PROPER AIR FLOW FOR QUICK DISPERSSION OF GASES TO BE INSURED. • REGULAR USE OF PPE IS MANDATORY AT COKE OVEN. • REGULAR RESPIRATORY EXERCISE IS MUST TO REDUSE CO LEVEL IN BREATH. • ADDICTIONS LIKE SMOKING TOBBACO & OPIUM SHOULD BE STRICTLY PROHIBITED. • REGULAR MEDICAL CHECK-UP.
