ABOUT PUNJAB: • Area (geographical) : 5.04 m ha • Net sown area: 4.2 m ha • Irrigated area: 4.04 m ha(96%) • Tubewell irrigated: 2.92 m ha (73%) through 11.68 lakh tubewells • Canal irrigated : 1.10 m ha (27%) • Total cropped area: 7.9 m ha • Cropping intensity: 189%
Punjab leads in: • Punjab State with only 1.53 percent of Geographical area of the Country Produces about: • 22% wheat, • 12 % rice , • 10% cotton, • 45% mushrooms, • 26% honey and • 10% milk. • It contributes 40-50% of rice and 50-70% of wheat (75% during 2006) to the central pool. • It produces 2% of Rice, 3% Wheat and @ 2% Cotton of the WORLD

STRATEGY FOR KHARIF 2008 • Improvement in seed replacement rate and seed treatment. • Judicious and balanced use of chemical fertilizers on the basis of soil test, leaf color chart. • Reclamation of degraded soils and soil fertility management by the application of gypsum, green manuring and crop rotation • Promotion of Integrated Pest Management to minimize the use of chemicals/pesticides. • Ground water management through rain water harvesting and artificial recharge. • Propagation of efficient on-farm water management. • Propagation of latest crop production technology through farmer training camps, front line demonstrations and use of electronic and print media

RASHTRIYA KRISHI VIKAS YOJANA • Envisaged Allocation for 2007-08 : Rs.37.95 crores. • The Ist meeting of State Level Sanctioning Committee (SLSC) held on 09.01.2008. • Projects worth Rs. 58.34 crores approved. • 90 % of the total outlay sanctioned for 2007-08 i.e. Rs.34.15 crores released. • SLSC meeting on 29.02.2008 to review the preparedness for implementation of approved projects • District Agricultural Plans (DAP) and State Agricultural Plan are being prepared.

STRATEGY TO STRENGTHEN EXTENSION NETWORK • PRE SEASONAL WORKSHOP TO FINALIZE PACKAGE OF PRACTICES FOR DIFFERENT CROPS. • ORGANIZATION OF FARMER TRAINING PROGRAMMES ON LATEST CROP PRODUCTION TECHNOLOGY AT DISTRICT, BLOCK AND VILLAGE LEVEL. KVKS ARE BEING ACTIVELY INVOLVED IN TRAINING AND FLDS’. • ATMA’S SET-UP IN 10 DISTRICTS OF THE STATE AND ALL 20 DISTRICTS TO BE COVERED DURING THE YEAR. • ONE INTEGRATED FARMER’S TRAINING CENTRE TO BE SET-UP UNDER RKVY AT ABUL KHURANA IN DISTRICT MUKATSAR. • FOUR LIVE CROP SEMINARS TO BE ORGANIZED UNDER MASS MEDIA SUPPORT TO AGRICULTURE BY DD JALANDHAR. • PAMETI TO BE STRENGTHENED FOR SKILL UP GRADATION OF EXTENSION FUNCTIONARIES.
AVAILABILITY OF SEEDS • STRENGTHENING OF INFRASTRUCTURE ON SEED FARMS FOR PRODUCTIONOF QUALITY SEED. • EXPENSION OF SEED PRODUCTION PROGRAMME OF PUNSEED, PAU AND PRIVATE GROWERS. • EMPHASIS ON REPLACEMENT OF TRADITIONAL VARIETIES WITH HYBRIDS.
SEED TREATMENT • Seed Testing Campaign for 100% Seed Treatment will be launched in Kharif 2008.
IMPLEMENTATION OF NHM • CROP SPECIFIC CLUSTERS IDENTIFIED. 1.CITRUS : FEROZEPUR, MUKATSAR, BATHINDA AND HOSHIARPUR 2.MANGO : GURDASPUR, HOSHIARPUR 3.PEAR & GUAVA : AMRITSAR, TARANTARN 4.LITCHI : GURDASPUR • ADDITIONAL AREA OF 5000 HECTARES BROUGHT UNDER HORTICULTURE. • ABOUT 12.50 LAC NURSERY FRUIT PLANTS OF RECOMMENDED VARIETIES DISTRIBUTED. • CLOSE LAISION WITH PAU AND FARMERS IN PREPRATION OF AREA BASED PLANS AND PROMOTION OF PRODUCTION TECHNOLOGY.

AGRICULTURAL MARKETING Well Established Marketing Infrastructure : 145 Principle Market Yards, 300 Sub Yards and 1574 purchase centres Purchase centre within 6 to 8 km of every village. Four Treminal Markets being set-up at Hosiarpur, Mukatsar, Jalandhar and Ludhiana. Strengthening of existing Fruit and Vegetable Markets under DMI Project and under RKYV. Establishment of temporary Perishable Cargo Centre at Amritsar Air Port to promote exports. Strengthening of Marketing infrastructure under World Bank assisted MACP Project. APMC Act is being amended. Establishment of Bulk Handling Unit for foodgrains at Moga in PPP mode
