  1. IMMORALITY VS AMORALITY • Immorality says: “Certain things are right and wrong, but I don’t care!” • Amorality says: “There is no such thing as right of wrong!” • Humanist says: “Morality is situational and autonomous.”

  2. RIGHTEOUSNESS UNDER ATTACK • What is meant by “righteousness?” • Philosopher calls “ethics” • Theologian calls “morals” • Educator calls “values” • Man of the street calls “goodness” • Bible calls “righteousness”

ATTACK ON RIGHTEOUSNESS HAS PRODUCED THE WORST RESULTS • More crime, more juvenile delinquency, more suicide, more adultery, more divorces, more homosexuality • “Don’t try to impose your narrow, moralizing views on me!” • Not talk about “morality!” • Talk of “health, scientific facts, self-esteem, economic considerations”

FIFTY YEARS AGO HARDLY ANYONE QUESTIONED BIBLICAL ETHICS OR MORALITY • Most people looked on divorce as disgraceful • Pregnancy outside marriage was a disaster • Chastity was a good thing • Honest day’s work was the responsibility of any respectable & dependable man • Honesty was the best policy

FIFTY YEARS AGO HARDLY ANYONE QUESTIONED BIBLICAL ETHICS OR MORALITY • Most people looked on divorce as disgraceful • Pregnancy outside marriage was a disaster • Chastity was a good thing • Honest day’s work was the responsibility of any respectable & dependable man • Honesty was the best policy NOT TODAY!

GOD AND ETHICS • Ethics comes from the Greek & Morals comes from the Latin • Roots of both mean “custom” or “habitual mode of conduct.” • English- morality as to do with conduct as it is commonly practiced in the everyday affairs of life • Ethics- the formal, philosophical pursuit of general, systematic standards for evaluating human conduct in general

  7. GOD AND ETHICS • Ethics –”What should I do?” and “Why should I do it?” • Morality – “This is what I actually do!”

Apart from Creation There are no Real Ethical Obligations; No Such Things as Absolute Norms for Conduct – no Real Moral Absolutes • Deuteronomy 6:17 “keep the commandments of the Lord your God” • Jeremiah 11:7 “Obey My voice.” • John 14:15 “keep My commandments” • Isaiah 33:22 “Judge, … Lawgiver, … King” • “Why should we have to do what God tells us?” • “Because He is Sovereign of the universe; Creator, we are creatures; Potter, we are the clay!” • Ecclesiastes 12:13 “Fear God…keep his commandment”

  9. EVERY SINGLE HUMAN BEING IS OBLIGATED TO DO GOD’S WILL BECAUSE IT IS THE OBLIGATION OF THE CREATURE TO THE CREATOR • Jeremiah 10:23 – man cannot direct his own steps • 2 Timothy 3:16,17 “thoroughly equipped for every good work”

  10. GOD-CENTERED ETHICS ARE BUILT ON: • The Nature of God • The Will of God • The Way of God • The Word of God

  11. BIBLICAL WORLDVIEW BELIEVES THAT GOD HAS IDENTIFIED IN THE BIBLE CERTAIN THINGS THAT ARE INHERENTLY RIGHT OR WRONG • Ethical absolutes & that eternal consequences attached to decisions men make in regard to these ethical absolutes.

  12. BIBLICAL WORLDVIEW BELIEVES THAT GOD HAS IDENTIFIED IN THE BIBLE CERTAIN THINGS ARE INHERENTLY RIGHT OR WRONG • Truths designed to live within human skin, to be seen & read by unbelievers, as God’s people bring to bear His mind, His will & His Purposes in everyday decisions of their lives

  13. How are we to make moral choices? By knowing God and His Word. Hebrews 5:14
