A Teacher ? Congratulations to each one of you for choosing the Teaching Career! You chose the noblest profession of all when you were called to teach and you answered that call. Now you have a great responsibility ahead of you, as you hold the future in your hands: To Teach Is to Touch the Future!
Expectations ? Today’s teachers are not expected to just teach and to help students pass FCAT’s. Teaching is a very demanding and stressful career as they are expected to do much more. Orange County Schools To complete the application process for Orange County volunteer.ocps.net and complete the “Additions Volunteer Application” • Guidelines for Observation Hours: • You must complete a background check with the county you are applying. Anywhere from 1-5 days you can then log back into the site and check to see if you have been approved. If you have not been approved or contacted within 7 days then you may contact Community Resources at 407-317-3200 extensions 2922 or 2968. If for any reason you have been arrested, you must list yes and state all information requested on the application. • If you have been arrested for a misdemeanor, it does not mean you will not be permitted to observe, however, if you do not tell the truth on the application, they will block you from contact with all schools including your internship.
Orange County Schools request: WHEN EMAILING A SCHOOL TO REQUEST OBSERVATION HOURS YOU MUST: • Please advise the students to add “Request for Observation Hours” in the subject line. • Specify the type of class or students and grade level they need to observe. (Regular Ed., Special Ed., Sheltered Ed, or Dual Language (English or Spanish) • Specify the date and times they are available to complete their hours and be on time. • Specify how many hours you need. (Get in and Get out, minimum 3-5 hours per visit) • Make sure they choose the schools on the additions application. • If you call, do not leave a long distance phone number. • Email is always easier, go to the school website and you can find the email address. • If your name doesn’t appear on the schools approved list, you will not be able to obtain hours. • Please dress appropriately, and no cell phones or texting while observing, you will be asked to leave. • Remember…you may be applying for employment there one day, so make a good impression. Lawton Chiles Elementary A SPECIAL PROGRAM THAT GOES BEYOND OBSERVATIONS! • Lawton Chiles was adopted this past year by Valencia. As part of that adoption Lawton Chiles accepts 20-25 students per semester that would like to work hands-on with teachers and students in place of their observation hours. You would be volunteering the 15+ hours.
Lawton Chiles is a Pre-K-5th Grade Elementary School with much diversity. They are a Title I school with approximately 800 students. • Grades 3-5 are departmentalized just like middle school • ESOL population-K-2 Sheltered ESOL classrooms • Special Education Program Emotional Disability Program, Autistic Program, and Special Education students with learning disabilities in all classrooms. • Music, Art, Physical Education and Science Lab classes • Chorus, Garden Club, Science Club, Chess Club, Math Club, Field Trips LAWTON CHILES ELEMENTARY11001 Bloomfield Drive Orlando, FL 32825TEL 407-737-1470

I will then place you with a teacher so that you may begin a learning experience so enjoyable that you will want to do more than just your 15 hours. We want you to stay as long as you like and observe/volunteer in as many classrooms as you desire.
