10. Bypass Mail
The U.S. Post Office is bypassed and packages are taken directly to approved air carriers for transport.
Bypass mail ships bulk items, from 1,000 pounds to 2,500 pounds, that are boxed up and put on a pallet for shipping.
An example, a store in Akiak orders supplies and food from Costco in Anchorage. Store employees gather the items, box them up, put them on pallets and then haul the pallets to an air carrier that has special certifications and approvals from the U.S. government. Planes take the pallets from Anchorage to Bethel to Akiak. The customer pays parcel post rates, money that gets to the U.S. Postal Service.
Alaska is the only state in the nation to have such a system for mail.
