Commonly called as Heller’s Syndrome, Childhood Disintegrative Disorder is a rare condition, which is characterized by late onset of development delays in language, social function, and motor skills. Medical professionals and researchers have not been able to find a cause of this disorder. Many doctors consider CDD a low functioning form of autism, owing to many underlying similarities to autism.
The symptoms of Childhood Disintegrative Disorder are classified in a bracket called Pervasive Developmental Disorder. CDD symptoms range from severe loss of social, communication and interactive skills to other set of skills. Onset usually occurs after the age of four. As mentioned before, CDD bears some similarity to autism; however, autism usually occurs at an earlier age and is relatively more common.
Now, let’s discuss Pervasive Developmental Disorder. PDD includes the following psychological disorders • CDD – Child hood Disintegrative Disorder • Asperger’s Syndrome • Autism • Rett Syndrome • Pervasive Developmental Disorder – Not Otherwise Specified
PDD encompass a group of condition listed above, which primarily involves delays in the development of many basic skills, ability to communicate, interact, to socialize and to use their imagination. Individuals with this PDD are often confused in their thinking and struggle to understand the world around them. As these conditions emerge during the crucial development years in children of four years and above, these are often considered as development disorders. Moreover, the symptoms develop far earlier than four years, however, parents often fail to notice a problem until a child shows signs of struggle in walking, talking or developing overall.
Some signs and symptoms of CDD include • Significant loss of previously acquired or learned skills before a certain age in at least two of the following areas • Ability to say words or sentences • Ability to understand verbal and non-verbal communication • Social skills and self-care skills • Bowel and bladder control • Play skills
Impairment occurs in at least two of the following • Social interaction • Communication • Repetitive and stereotyped patterns of behaviors, interests and activities
CDD Treatment Treatment for Childhood Disintegrative Disorder is similar to that for autism, however, unfortunately there is no cure for this disorder. Treatment for this condition includes • Medications: there are no specific medications to treat CDD. You can consult your doctor, what is risperdal used for? However, to calm severe behavioral problems like aggression and repetitive movement, there are many antipsychotic medications.
Behavioral Therapy: psychologists, speech therapists, physical therapists and occupational therapists, even parents, teachers and caregivers, commonly use this treatment. The prognosis for children with this condition may be poor and worse than for autistic children. But with support and utmost residential care, you can give them a good life with opportunities.
