U-2 Spy Incident • May 1961 - US spy plane called “U-2” was flying over Soviet airspace and shot down. • The American pilot, Francis Gary Powers, of the plane was killed. • This incident sparked a verbal battle between Russia and the US. • As a result of this, The Paris Summit, a conference intended to ease hostilities and suspicions of military attacks, collapsed.
Literature of the Vietnam War • The war sparked inspiration for many authors of this time period. • Left a very deep impression on soldiers and citizens. • Pieces of literature included: • Going After Cacciato by Tim O’ Brian (war veteran) - About a newcomer to Vietnam that fantasizes of escaping with his squad to Paris. • A Rumor of War by Phillip Caputo - About his reflection of the war.
Fallen Angel by Walter Dean Myers - about a teen from Harlem and his duty in Vietnam.
