Using Non-Specific Sources #1 • PubMed treats mental health differently in the MeSH hierarchy than “physical” health: • Diseases Category vs. Psychiatry & Psychology Category • Category includes mechanisms, disorders, processes, and disciplines • Mental Health = “The state wherein the person is well adjusted” LJH
Let’s Discuss! Here are some questions to think about – and to discuss in the chat: • Where do you tend to go first for mental health information? • What kind of information do you find there? • Now that you know how PubMed treats psychiatry, will you act differently? LJH

Let’s Practice! • You have a student who is interested in studying the psychosocial needs and stresses on people who care for Alzheimer’s patients. The student would like to find, in particular, tests for evaluating Alzheimer’s caregivers’ mental health, as well as articles evaluating these tests. • Using PsycINFO, do a keyword search, including limits as appropriate, to find one or two RECENT articles that would be a good starting place for this student. • Come back and chat about what you did and what you found! LJH

Citing References: Children • Citing Articles = Newer articles that use yours in their bibliographies LJH
Cited References: Parents • Cited references = older articles, in the bibliography LJH

What Have We Learned? • Psychiatry / psychology is not adequately addressed by either the medical literature or the social sciences literature • Searching for – and defining – information in “psych” can be complex and time consuming. LJH
What Else Have We Learned? • PsycINFO is the primary source for finding mental health literature citations & abstracts. • PsycINFO allows several different modes of searching: keyword, thesaurus, and citation. • These search options are similar to PubMed and CINAHL, with important differences. LJH
Further (chat) Questions What didn’t we talk about? What do you want to know more about? Where do you see these resources as useful? Please use the chat to discuss! LJH
