A little about me • 1st year at Hull • Taught 15 years at Houston County • Bachelors degree from GC&SU • Masters degree from GC&SU • Specialists degree from GC&SU • Divorced – one daughter in the 7th grade • Grew up in Puerto Rico • Love traveling

8th grade Promotion Criteria • 8th grade promotion requirements • To earn promotion to high school, Gwinnett 8th graders must pass both the 8th grade Writing Gateway (a GCPS requirement) and the Reading and Mathematics subtests of the Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests (a state requirement). • In addition, students must earn grades that reflect that a student has learned the 8th grade AKS in order to be successful at the next grade level. For 2011-12, students must pass four out of five subjects for the school year, with a student’s two Connections classes being averaged as one grade each semester. Language arts and math must be two of the subjects passed. To pass a course, a student must earn a grade average of no less than 70% each semester. A grade average of less than 70% either semester counts as course failure for the school year.
Progress Reports • Progress reports will be sent home every 4 ½ and 13 weeks. • They will be sent home via students in the report card envelopes. • Parents need to keep the progress reports, sign the envelope, and have their child return the signed envelope to their homeroom teacher. • Dates for the first and second semester: • September 10 • November 5 • January 28 • April 15
Georgia History The focus of the curriculum is the study of the progression of the state of Georgia throughout the context of United States’ history.
Topics we cover this year… • Georgia’s Geography • Colonization • Revolution • Westward Expansion • Civil War • New South • WWI and WWII • Civil Rights • Modern Georgia • Government
Textbook/Supplies Needed • Georgia and the American Experience • We have a class set of books in the room so students may leave their book at home or access the online version of the textbook. • 3 ring binder • Colored pencils • Glue stick • Scissors
Major Policies Absent Work: • Student’s responsibility to collect assignments and/or notes they missed Late Work: • Students will be given 2 weeks from the time the assignment is due to turn in late work. • If assignments are not turned in students will be asked to come in early, signed up for Grade Recovery, signed up for Saturday School, or not allowed to participate in classroom activities (such as review games)
Notebook • Each student will be required to maintain an interactive notebook for Social Studies. Everything we do in Social Studies class will go into this notebook. • This notebook should be brought to class every day. • Notebook Checks:The student’s receive a quiz grade for their notebook checks.
