  3. In-Class Analysis Describe all the visual elements you see in as much concrete detail as possible. What do you think is the overall argument and purpose of this image? Who do you think is the specific persona and audience of the image? What rhetorical appeals operate in this visual rhetoric (list each one in turn)? What are the effects of these rhetorical appeals on the persuasiveness of the text? How do visual and verbal work together to convey an argument? What is the significance of Kairos (or context) for the power of the image? What would you like your readers to learn or think about in reading your analysis of the image? What specific and unique perspective can you share about this image? What will be your thesis for this paper?

  4. Review Jason Benhaim’s visual rhetoric assignment in EID (p. 24-27) 4 groups • What’s the thesis statement? • Which arrangement strategy is used? • What’s the style? (persona, voice, word choice, etc.) • What rhetorical analysis does the author employ? (Rhetoric triangle? Historical analysis? Cultural analysis? Contextual analysis? etc. ) • What strategies are used in the introduction? • Does the conclusion effective and persuasive?

  5. Homework Suggested Readings: Sontag, “America”, Mieszkowski, and Miliard (EID Ch 14) | DK p. 120-123 MCL Each group analyzes one model paper and fills out the questions. http://wps.ablongman.com/long_alfano_envision_2/64/16465/4215164.cw/index.html Next Monday, each group offers a short presentation on the paper to the class: discuss thesis, choice of visual rhetoric for analysis, introduction and conclusion strategy, explicit or implicit use of rhetorical terms and strategies of persuasion.
