Sailors were often rough men who chose to go to sea. Some men were forced to become sailors by “press gangs” that would grab men as they walked down the street.
A sea-biscuit was sometimes the only thing that sailors had to eat on long sea voyages. Often the biscuit was made with just flour, water, and salt and it was so hard that you could write on it (like this one). Sometimes, maggots grew in the biscuit.
If a sailor didn’t do as he was told, he might be “keel-hauled” or whipped with a “cat o’nine tails”.
When sailors didn’t get enough Vitamin C, they developed scurvy.
