Dr. Ramana V. Grandhi Professor and Director Ph.D. in Engineering Program Celebrating the Ph.D. Program’s first 100 Graduates in September, 2011
What is the Ph.D.? • Ph.D. is a research-based degree • Coursework prepares you for research • Successful students focus on research objectives from the beginning
Why earn a Ph.D.? A doctoral degree prepares you for a research-based career: • Industry • Government labs • Academia
Ph.D. in Engineering Program • Transcends traditional engineering disciplines • Outstanding collaborative opportunities • Three engineering departments • Seven research focus areas
Department of Biomedical, Industrial and Human Factors Engineering Focus Areas with BIE Faculty: • Industrial and Human Systems • Materials and Nanotechnology • Medical and Biological Systems • Sensor Signal and Image Processing
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering Focus Areas with ME Faculty: • Computational Design and Optimization • Controls and Robotics • Materials and Nanotechnology
Department of Electrical Engineering Focus Areas with EE Faculty: • Controls and Robotics • Electronics, Microwaves, VLSI, and Nanotechnology • Sensor Signal and Image Processing
External Review • In 2012, the Ph.D. Program was reviewed by a panel of engineering faculty from other universities • The results of the review were highly favorable • The reviewers made particularly excellent comments about the interdisciplinary nature of the program
