CNH | KEY CLUB Gmail: Labels • Create labels to organize different types of emails • Choose colors to distinguish from each category • To create labels, select a few emails and click “Labels” or “Move to” and a Create new option will appear DCON 2013
CNH | KEY CLUB Gmail: Filters • Used to automatically label and sort each incoming email! • In the main Gmail page, click Gear > Settings > Filters • You can also run a search to directly create a filter • Also: check similar messages and click More > Filter messages like these DCON 2013
CNH | KEY CLUB Gmail: Labs • Labs are experimental features to experiment with • Labs can range from an undo send button to replying with canned messages • Can be enabled under Gmail settings on the “Labs” tab DCON 2013
CNH | KEY CLUB Gmail: Tasks & Starred • Tasks keeps track of what you need to accomplish • Tasks is located under the Gmail logo dropdown menu (along with contacts) • It’s more a sticky note than an agenda • Star emails to select important information that can be easily accessible later • Example: Instructions on how to submit publications • Google Tasks syncs with your smartphone! CNH | KEY CLUB Gmail: Boomerang • Internet Browser add-on that allows you to extend the use of Gmail! • Automatically email messages atthe time you want • Boomerang can automatically bounce back emails that contain important deadlines DCON 2013
CNH | KEY CLUB Google Services: Calendar • You can share calendars with anyone! • Add reminders for monthly recurring items • Syncs with your smartphone! DCON 2013
CNH | KEY CLUB Google Services: Docs • Google Docs (aka Google Drive) is a powerful tool for online collaboration and sharing. • Useful for quick conversions (upload a .docx or .odt and download as PDF or doc) • Live collaboration – you can work with others on Presentations, Spreadsheets, and text Documents. • Beware compatibility issues between Docs and Office! • Small visual differences may occur. CNH | KEY CLUB Antivirus and Security • Microsoft Security Essentials • Free, light, often-updated and powerful antivirus • MalwarebytesAnti-Malware • Use this as backup if something terrible happens and MSE isn’t enough. • Free, with a paid version for Pro features (the free version is more than enough to save you!) CNH | KEY CLUB Battle of the Browsers • The web browser you use is important to your workflow! • Some browser are more secure or more compatible with the Internet than others. • Long story short – Use Google Chrome. • It’s more secure, faster, and more compatible with Google Services and the web than other browsers • FireFox and Safari are okay, too. • Try to avoid Internet Explorer if possible • If you must use Internet Explorer, update to the latest version! CNH | KEY CLUB Chat, Conferencing, and Facebook • Communication is great – communicate often! • Popular video chat services include oovooand Skype • Google Hangouts – also fantastic • Google Talk – chat right from your Gmail inbox! • Facebook is fun and convenient, but keep things civil and use email for business matters. • Avoid all that drama! • Keep business and personal lives separate! • Remember, you are a representative of all our member and this district! • Whatever you say online is actually highly visible and “permanent” to some extent • Same applies to Twitter and tumblr– watch what you say!
