15. Self Sustaining Community • Walls daughters’ families were not the only people on the train • To qualify to ride, the rider must have a trade (i.e., farmer, carpenter, black smith, quartermaster, etc.) • With all the tradesmen, the train contained a self-sustaining town unto itself.

Why Move to Indian Territory • Because they were hand-picked and recruited by LB Tatum to go to Indian Territory • Blacks had a vote in Indian Territory from the beginning of settlement • Blacks settled the Indian Territory • Blacks were the law in Indian Territory • There was a lot of talk and rumors about Oklahoma being a black state, so black moved there in large numbers.
