Strategy • OARNet (~25% Resources) • Shared Infrastructure making Ohio the leader in leveraging cloud computing in higher education • Hardware platform providing an integrated technology platform for higher education • Merit (~18% Resources) • Increase member affinity • Strategic services, but not strategic differentiators • A clear value otherwise unavailable • Synergistic to deliver • Are more valuable because they run on our network and thus make our network more valuable
Strategy • NCREN (<2% Resources) • Provide shared services for economies of scale • Broker services from 3rd parties • Leverage the network where appropriate • WiscNet (<10% Resources) • React to market (peers, industry, members) • Choose best opportunities to experiment • Put successful experiments into production • MAX (<1% Resources) • Economies of scale • High performance • See what happens
Internet2 • Open Cloud Demonstration Project • Use volume to support “open standards.” • Leverage existing standards (IdM, Performance Monitoring) • Shibboleth/InCommon • PerfSonar • Leverage high performance network • Simplify policy, licensing, contracting • Experiment • Open to working with Regionals • Internet2 looks to be an aggregator not a provider
Summary • Significant minority are moving in this direction • Some top down, some bottom up • Approaches are as diverse as regional structure and business models • A real sense we have to do “it” • But what is “it?”
Parting Thoughts • The landscape has shifted underneath us • Cloud computing is part of that shift • Reacting to that shift requires addressing cloud computing • Can we address it the same way? • How can we help each other?
