  2. Ascertain • Verb • Ms. Jenks sent Terry to ASCERTAIN the cause of the delay. • Definition: To find out for certain.

  3. Chastise • Verb • A hundred years ago disruptive students were chastised with a cane. • Definition: To punish by beating.

  4. Cull Verb • Game wardens cull the deer herd when it grows to large for the food supply. Def-To select and remove weak or inferior members from a group.

  5. Defer • Verb • The teacher deferred the decision to move the students out of the class until after the test. • Definition: To put off or postpone, to yield to out of respect for the knowledge or authority of another.

  6. Desist • Verb • Both sides must DESIST from shooting while their leaders meet to negotiate. • Def- to stop doing something.

  7. Discredit • Verb • New scientific evidence often DISCREDITS older ideas. Def-To hurt the reputation of; to destroy confidence in.

  8. Encroach • Verb • We trimmed the branches of the maple tree that ENCROACHED on our property. • Def- To advance little by little beyond the usual limits.

  9. Foreboding • Noun • We felt a strong sense of foreboding when we saw the freezing cat outside our window. • A strong feeling that something bad is about to happen.

  10. Humane • Adj. What is HUMANE treatment for a horse with a broken leg? Def- Compassionate, kind to other human beings or to animals.

  11. Irrational • Adj. As she approached the house, Candace felt an irrational fear inside herself. • Not real, not governed by reason.

  12. Lurid • Adj. My parents will not let me see that movie because of the several LURID scenes it contains. • Causing horror; extremely gruesome, Glowing with redness of flames.

  13. Perpetuate • V. The segregation of people into small groups, only PERPETUATES the hostility they feel toward each other. • Def-To cause to continue indefinitely.

  14. Restive • Adj. We grew restive as we awaited permission to return to our flooded house. • Def- Showing impatience because of restrictions or delay.

  15. Stamina • Noun- Jill claims that running 5 miles a day has built up her stamina. • Def- Physical strength or courage to resist hardship, illness or fatigue.

  16. Surveillance • Noun- Because the police believed the suspect would contact his sister, they placed her under round-the-clock Surveillance. Def- Close observation of a person or area.
