Polymers nanocomposites sorbents In our department we mainly work with various polymers. These polymers are using for creation of nanocomposites, semiconductors and nanoparticles. Other direction of our work is preparation of high capacity sorbents on based of polymers.
Introduction • Azerbaijan is not only oil producing country, also heavy industry such as ferrous and nonferrous metallurgy, light industry are very developed. • Heavy metals can enter a water supply by industrial and consumer waste, or even from acidic rain breaking down soils and releasing heavy metals into streams, lakes, rivers, and groundwater.
Heavy metals and environment Heavy metals are dangerous because they tend to bioaccumulate. Bioaccumulation means an increase in the concentration of a chemical in a biological organism over time, compared to the chemical's concentration in the environment. Compounds accumulate in living things any time they are taken up and stored faster than they are broken down (metabolized) or excreted. For example Cadmium is produced as an inevitable by-product of zinc (or occasionally lead) refining also used in nickel/cadmium batteries, present as an impurity in several products, including phosphate fertilisers, detergents and refined petroleum products. It is known, that incorporation functional groups into a polymeric matrixi increases sorption ability of the sorbents used for waste and industrial water treatment from heavy metal ions and toxic organic pollutants.
Research activities For obtaining the sorbent, the initial polymer, i.e. SR-polybutadiene was treated by reacting oxidative chlorophospherylation with PCl3 in the presence of oxygen, followed by hydrolysis of the obtained product. It was established that sorbent include functionally active phosphone and phosphate acidic groups. Result: the obtained material can be used as active sorbent for water purification from heavy metals and organic pollutants.
Research activities The process of sorption proceeds with chaining of atoms of hydrogen in phosphon – and phosphat acid groups on ions of metals by ion-chaining mechanism.The reaction is weak exothermic and temperature in the reaction medium go up till 50-60o C.Rate of reaction and degree of transformation depend on PB:PCI3 ratio, and also from the oxygen rate in reaction medium.

Research activities Used : 50 g of polybutadiene 650 ml of CCl4 as solvent 125 ml of PCl3 Oxygen supply 8 q/l Modification process duration 20 Hours
The following facility was installed in order to syntheses the sorbent
Separation of the obtained sorbent with the size of particles • The obtained sorbent was separated in 3 parts with the following size of particles: • D=125 µm, D=125-250µm,D=250-500µm
Chemicals • The following salts were used for preparing definite concentrations of solution: • CdCl2∙2.5H2O • FeCl3∙6H2O • NiCl2∙6 H2O • MnCl2∙2H2O
Chemicals • Solutions were prepared with the following concentrations: • 0.1 M • 0.01 M • 0.05 M for each metal • 0.001M • 0.005 M • 0.0001M • 0.0005 M • The test solutions were prepared by diluting standard solutions to the desired concentrations.
Sorption process • 28 probes of sorbent (each 50 mg) were measured for the sorption process purpose. • 15 ml of each solution • The sorption duration – 3 days • Ambient conditions
Used ICP optical emission 2100 This equipment was used in order to get information about sorption capability of obtained sorbent towards some heavy metals ions from chloride solutions.
Results derived from ICP for each test solution • Results from ICP were used in order to calculate sorption capability and present concentration dependence of sorption capability in solution.
