  2. About the TajMahal • It is a Mausoleum which is a massive tomb • Built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahanwhen his favourite wife died • Built 1632 – 53 (took 23 years) • In Agra , Northern India

  3. Building structure • One of the 7 wonders of the world • Perfect symmetry • Made of white marble • Lots of detail

  4. Plan • Great Gate • Base • Tomb • Domes • Minarets • Gardens and fountains

  5. Gate • Made of red sandstone + white marble dome • Even the Gate looks amazing • Enter through the middle door

  6. Base • Square shape • White marble (a hard heavy white stone) • Designs carved all over • The builders left their marks scratched on it – like stars , fishes

  7. Actual tomb • In the perfect middle of the building • Underneath the Base • The only room not in perfect symmetry – because they added the Shah’s tomb

  8. Domes • Shaped like a pearl • Has a finial at the top • Is a double dome From the inside it is beautiful and shining

  9. Minarets • Four pillars so that there is balance • Prayer towers • Muslims believe the throne of God has 4 towers

  10. Gardens • Lots of symmetrical squares • Represent the 4 rivers of paradise: water, milk, honey and wine • Fountains in the middle – reflects the building

  11. Interesting Facts • The Shah cut the boss of the workers hands off so he could not design anything as beautiful as it again • 1000 elephants and 22,000 workers constructed the TajMahal!
