  6. Apodyterium • Changing Room • Slaves watch belongings • Thieves common visitors

  7. Tepidarium • Strigiling • Roman tool to wipe sweat and dirt • Used oil, not soap • Done by slave if you had one • Could get massage • Hair plucking

  8. Caldarium • Hottest Room • Opens pores • Hot Pool • Heated by the hypocaust • Heats the tiles • Shoes worn to prevent burns

  9. Frigidarium • Very cold water • Closes your pores • Meant as a refresher

  10. Background • Thermae built by State • Balneae privately owned • Social Place • Like a community center

  11. Baths of Caracella • Public library • Swimming pool • Rome, Italy
