  2. Ancient Roman Baths • Instead of single person baths, in ancient Rome, there were large houses for bathing.

  3. What Were They For? • Public bathing was a part of every day life for the Romans • They were used for much more than just hygiene, such as recreation

  4. Visiting the baths • In present day millions of people visit the bath, you can look but can’t swim.

  5. When baths were created • The Celts made the first Public Bath. • Dedicated to the goddess Sulis

  6. Public Bathing? • In ancient Rome, public bathing was the way to go, it was accepted by everyone.

  7. Who uses the baths • Men us the bath after work. And then women would use it.

  8. Use of the baths • Bathing • Running • Recreation • Library • Snacks

  9. Tools • Strigil-scrap oil off skin • Towel- dry self • Oil flask –put on oil to body

  10. Rooms • Cold Room • Cold pool

  11. The Heating system • Heating system to heat the baths. • hypocaust

  12. Private Bath Houses • Wealthy Romans sometimes had private bath houses but they were open to the public for a fee

  13. In the Bath House • First they went to a changing room to change from street clothes to bathing clothes • Lockers for clothing

  14. Bathing • After exercise, the Romans removed dirt and oils with the strigil

  15. Under the baths • The heat from the baths were coming from under the baths. • Slaves used fire to heat the baths.

  16. Largest Roman bath • Diocletian • Created in A.D 305, covered an area of 130,000 sq yards
