The “Adjustment” Increased responsibility and independence Increased reliance on friends More transitions and more teachers New routines More work, less play No h.w. packets or folders sent home. H.W. is kept in the binder. Increased expectations with fewer reminders Student (not teacher or parent) is held accountable for his/her actions and habits

  4. How You Can Help Your Child • Check agendas daily or at least weekly (Thursday evening) • Check classroom website. See instructions on first page of agenda. • Ask student to show you the homework that is “done.” Mrs. Mernaugh & I don’t collect h.w. early. • Check organization • Provide a quiet place for homework

  5. Student Projects & Quizzes/Tests Notifications • If you would like to be on an email list regarding upcoming student projects & quizzes/tests dates, sign the sheet on the back table.

  6. The Agenda • Your child’s organizational tool • The parent’s lifeline • Responsibility-stays in binder • Neat and complete

  7. The Binder Become concerned if your child’s binder • Is empty or has minimal contents • Has papers that are not filed behind a subject divider • Has loose papers, any papers not clipped in the rings • Has no Agenda or the Agenda is not clipped in the rings

  8. Composition Books • Used during Language Arts, Math, & Science. Students have 3 total. • Notebooks contain essential vocabulary, notes, questions, and assignments for each subject. • Notebooks stay at school unless needed for homework assignment.

  9. Late and Missing Work • 5th Grade late work policy – assignments drop to 70% if late and 100% quality. • Students are given late work slip • Working Lunch – opportunity to work on late / missing work during lunch and recess • Check agenda for comments regarding missing / late work.

  10. Checking Grades Online • Complete a form to receive a user name and password • Grades are updated weekly • Ask child about assignment(s) that have been marked late or etc.

  11. Biztown 5th grade experience in community & economics. You may sign-up to volunteer today if you like. Sign-up sheet on the back table. Dec. 18th & 19th

  12. Reading Logs • Every child should read for at least 30 minutes per night. • Students will track their progress on the Reading Log • Reading Logs are due on Friday and new logs given each month. • Logs are kept in the binder.

  13. Swimming • 8 days of swimming lessons for our fifth graders this year at Curtis High School Pool later in the year.
