Use of Assonance • Assonance is used mostly in poems it can be easily confused with rhyming but assonance is something different. Assonance usually doesn’t have much affect on poems and is used mainly to add something interesting to the poem. It can however, be used to add emphasis to something in your poem as the eye is naturally drawn to the use of assonance.
Examples of Assonance From Edgar Allan Poe’s The Bells Hear the mellow wedding bells- Golden bells! What a world of happiness their harmony foretells Through the Balmy air night How they ring out their delight! From the molten-golden notes, And all in tune, What a liquid ditty floats To the turtle-dove that listens, when she gloats On the moon!
