  1. Numerical Weather Prediction Subcommittee Chairs: Ralph Petersen/Mark DeMaria MEMBERS NESDIS/ORA: Bob Aune, Paul Menzel, Tim Schmit, Dan Tarpley NESDIS/OSD: Jim Gurka NOAA/FSL: Dan Birkenheuer, Steve Koch CIRA/CSU: Jim Purdom

  2. NWP Tasks Identified at the 2001 GOES Users Conference • Develop prioritized list of Imager and Sounder products (both individual and combined) • Consider complement to other satellite (polar, etc) • Determine needs of data distribution for NWP • Latency versus quality • Impact of data compression • Develop plan for coordination with JCSDA • Investigate possibility for targeted observations • Workshop focused on NWP issues

  3. NWP Developments Since 2001 Meeting • No formal meeting of NWP subcommittee • Informal meetings among some members • Imager/Sounder Data and Products • Plan for regional models with 0.5-2 km resolution, global models 10-20 km horizontal resolution, both with 100-200 vertical levels • Model focus on radiance data, some products • Short-term/Nowcasting focus on products • 4 km HES highly desirable • Need cloud information, vertical moisture structure • Use imager data to assist with cloud/clear distinction • Surface properties/emissivity required • Combined GOES/Polar radiances/products • HES experience being gained with AIRS data

  4. NWP Developments Since 2001 Meeting • Data distribution needs for NWP • Issues for NWP still need to be addressed • Experience with channel sub-sampling being gained with AIRS data • Data compression issues being addressed by other sub-committees • Coordination with the JCSDA • JCSDA beginning to take shape • Announcement of Opportunity for first year funding released • Coordinate through involvement of NWP subcommittee co-chairs and members

  5. NWP Developments Since 2001 Meeting • Targeted observations • Allowances should be made in system design • Details of coordination between NWP centers and NESDIS operations need to be worked out • Could follow model of current GOES RSO periods • Workshop on GOES-R and NWP • None specifically for GOES-R, but many on-going related activities • ECMWF annual moisture workshop • AIRS conference (NCEP, NASA, NESDIS, ECMWF, UKM) • WRF model data assimilation sub-group • JCSDA efforts • New Issue: NOAA’s new mandate for air quality forecasting should be addressed • Will require “optional” ABI channels
