Lower Courts • Alderman’s Courts • Municipal ordinances within city limits • Justice of the Peace • Civil cases for less than $15,000. Criminal cases: certain misdemeanors and most motor vehicle cases
Intermediate Courts • Family Court • All domestic and juvenile cases • Court of Common Pleas • Civil cases between $15,000- $50,000. All misdemeanors except certain drug-related &traffic offenses. All preliminary hearings in felony cases.
High Courts • Superior Court • Exclusive jurisdiction over felonies and almost all drug offenses. No $ max in civil cases. Intermediate appeals court • Chancery Court* • All matters relating to equity. Mostly corporate issues, trusts, estates, disputes involving land purchase and ownership, commercial and contractual matters.
Supreme Court • State's appellate court which receives direct appeals from the Court of Chancery, the Superior Court, and the Family Court. • Sets administrative policy for the court system.
