Introduction • Online Community • Social Capital A. Bonding B. Bridging • Examples 1. Wikipedia.com 2. Skype.com 3. Dilbert.com 4. Dictionary.com • Conclusion • Questions?
Online Community • An online community is a group of people with common interests who use the Internet to communicate, work together and pursue their interests over time. • Web Sites • Email • Instant Messaging • Etc. • Online communities are “communities” first and “online” second.
Social Capital • Social capital "refers to the collective value of all ‘social networks' and the inclinations that arise from these networks to do things for each other," according to Robert Putnam. • Network • Values and norms • Bonding • Bridging
A strong example of Online Community • http://wikipedia.org/ • Wikipedia is a free online reference that is accessible to anyone and everyone • It is written collaboratively by volunteers and operated by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation based in St. Petersburg, Florida. • Wikipedia's volunteers' attempt to uphold a policy of "neutral point of view" under which views presented by notable persons or literature are summarized without an attempt to determine an objective truth.
Trust, Security and Norms? • Due to its open nature, vandalism and inaccuracy are constant problems in Wikipedia. • People who use this site trust and value the resources given through this site because they are part of its basic foundation.
Outsourcing • It has editions in about 180 languages (about 100 of which are active). Ten editions have more than 50,000 articles: English, German, French, Spanish, Japanese, Swedish, Italian, Dutch and Polish. According to Hitwise.com, an online measurement company, Wikipedia.com is the most popular reference site on the internet.
Online Community • Wikipedia.com takes people from all over the world to this one site with the parallel view for knowledge. • This Online Community is a prime example of IT. With IT, it causes the users of this site to ask more questions and provide more challenges.
What is Skype?http://www.skype.com • What is skype? -the newest form of interaction through the internet where “the world can talk for free”
Is Skype an online community? • What you can do; the pros: -Call from your computer to any ordinary phone line -Call from your computer to another computer -Service of voicemail -Send files (pictures, songs, documents, etc) -Chat -Phonebook from all over the world
Yes, No….. Maybe Both?! • Cons: is it free? Nope, nothing in life is free… http://www.skype.com/products/skypeout/rates/ • Results: Is it an online community site?
Is This an Example of Social Capital? • http://www.dilbert.com/ • Not an online community • Doesn’t bond or bridge • It offers no real network to bring people together and communicate with each other • Is an online community • Allows users to send E-cards, letting people keep in touch • Offers an online shop
Is This an Example of an Online Community? • http://dictionary.reference.com/ • Not an online community • Offers no network or other way for people to get together and communicate with each other • Is an online community • Allows you to search the web • Offers other places online where you could interrelate with the word you searched for
Conclusion • The value online communities add to local networking is vast. • All-in-all, online communities are about people needing an easier and more accessible way to ‘get together’.
