The Law Student Senate is a forum for student leaders to coordinate events, campaigns, and other business related to the operation of the Law Student Senate and the Student Bar Association, in promoting the interests of students at the University of San Francisco School of Law.

The Law Student Senate…what is it? • The Law Student Senate shall exist as a policy-enacting and informational forum for student leaders of the university to coordinate events, campaigns, or other business related to the operation of the members of the Law Student Senate or the Student Bar Association, in promoting the interests of the students of the University of San Francisco School of Law. (The Bylaws of the Law Student Senate) • Basically it is a forum where the student organizations get together each month (this semester it will be the first Tuesday of each month) to share ideas, concerns, and information relating to their student group and the law school. We also would vote on things if necessary, such as if we amend the Bylaws that I will be sending to all of the student groups.
Law Student Senate cont. • An example of one thing the Senate can do: The Law Student Senate shall also have the power, through Resolution, to suggest action be taken or issues be addressed by any other student, faculty, or staff of the University of San Francisco School of Law. Any such Resolution must be properly formatted and submitted to the Senate, and be approved by a majority of the Senate members. • Goal for the Senate this year: Communication & collaboration. To be interested in what others are doing in this community and go to each other’s events/help with each other’s events. Provide a forum for a united group of students. Continue building this tight-knit USF community and connect all student organizations.
Who is in the Senate? • The Law Student Senate shall be comprised of the following: • one(1) voting representative from each of the registered student organizations for the academic year in which the Senate is convened, as selected by the registered student organization; • ten (10) voting Class Representatives, elected or appointed through the SBA; • one (1) voting ABA Representative, appointed or elected through the SBA; • one(1) voting representative from the Moot Court Board, as selected by the Executive Director of the Moot Court Board; and • one (1) voting representative from each of the USF Law publications for the given year in which the Senate is meeting, as designated by the Editor-in-Chief for the given publication (e.g. 1 Law Review representative, 1 Maritime Law Journal Representative, 1 Intellectual Property Law Bulletin Representative)
Important provisions of the Bylaws • Voting Organization Obligations: Each voting member organization is required to have a knowledgeable representative at each Law Student Senate Meeting. Absence of an organization from more than two Law Student Senate meetings in a given academic year, will result in the automatic loss of the voting members right to participate in the Law Student Senate for the remainder of the academic year. Any voting member that loses its ability to participate in the Law Student Senate may also be subject to stricter requirements when requesting funding from the SBA, or may be subject to loss of other benefits conferred upon the voting member, including nightlife event dates or board placement. A voting member that otherwise satisfies the eligibility requirements, but has been removed from the Law Student Senate due to excess absences, may present to the Presiding Officer a Resolution to be introduced to the Senate, which may, by a majority, vote to reinstate the voting member. • Community Service requirement (Each student organization is required to host one community service event per semesterOrgs can collaborate!)
Provisions cont. • Bar night selection: Will be chosen at the first Senate meeting. See the bylaws for how exactly it’s done. • Bulletin Board placements will also be addressed at the first Senate meeting. There are groups that no longer exist that have boards right now, so we’ll be dealing with that. There will be an opportunity for new groups to go for these spaces or for groups to try and change the placement of their boards. See the bylaws for more information. • Student organization lockers will also be assigned at the first Senate meeting.
Dates • First Senate meeting: 9/5 at 5:30-6:20 PM. Room TBD. • Rest of dates for this semester: 10/3, 11/7, both at 5:30-6:20 PM. Room TBD.
