James 1:2-4 “Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”
Nehemiah wisely investigated the situation before getting started

The Initial External Challenge: Discouraging Ridicule (1-3) • “Angry and Greatly Incensed” • Ridicule • “Feeble Jews”
The Initial External Challenge: Discouraging Ridicule (1-3) • Will they restore the wall? • Will they offer sacrifices? • Will they finish in a day? • Can they “resurrect” the wall from a pile of rubble?
The Power of Words “No human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things out not to be so.” —James 3:8-10
The Power of Words “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.” —Proverbs 18:21
Some Food for Thought • Are you aware of the awesome power of your words? • Do you use words more often to build up or to tear down?
The Initial Response: Prayer (4-5) • “Imprecatory” • Hear us • Note our situation • Repay in kind
Nehemiah's “Imprecatory” Prayer (4-5) • Return their insults upon themselves! • Let them become plundered and taken captive! • Do not ignore their sin!
Some Food for Thought: • What is your typical “first response” when tough times and opposition come you way? • What would you like it to be?
The Next External Challenge: Dangerous Threats (7-8, 11-12) • Sanballat, Tobiah, the Arabs, the Ammonites and the men of Ashdod become very angry. • They plot to fight together against Jerusalem and cause trouble for the builders. • They promise to kill the builders if necessary in order to stop them from succeeding.
1 Peter 5:8-9 “Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist Him, standing firm in your faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings.”
Ephesians 6:12 “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”
The Next Response: Prayer with Wise Action (9, 13-14, 16-20, 22-23)
1 Corinthians 15:10 “By the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of [the other apostles]—yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me.”
How to Defeat the Enemy's Dangerous Discouragements: • God-dependent Prayer • God-informed Planning • God-empowered Action
Psalm 127:1 “Unless the Lord builds the house, its builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain.”
2 Timothy 3:12 “In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.”
