  2. The importance of effective communication • Can we empower patients and allow them to participate more actively in the consultation? • Can we better prepare them for their 1stclinic visit? • Can this improve satisfaction and outcome?

  3. What did we do? • Information letter sent pre-1st appointment • 110 alternate new patients over 6 months • Describing the nature of a typical appointment • Detailing specific questions with advise on preparation • Satisfaction questionnaires completed by patients and doctors

How has this changed things and what else can we do? • All new patients now receive this letter • ‘How can I get the most out of the consultation? • Further communication skills training as part of patient education courses • Rheumatoid arthritis • Fibromyalgia • Explain the way we communicate and why
