GEONETCast Initiative of GEO presented at the EC GEONETCast workshop 5 March 2006 GEO Secretariat
Contents • Brief Overview of GEO and GEOSS • GEONETCast, 2006 WP Outlines, Progress and Present Status • Relationship to the Committees • Next steps • Questions and Discussion • Other Issues © GEO Secretariat
GEO and GEOSS • GEO is an intergovernmental group with a single Vision: GEOSS • GEOSS will deliver the benefits of EO to both data and information providers and consumers world wide. • For more information: www.earthobservations.org © GEO Secretariat
GEO and GEOSS • GEOSS, a global, comprehensive, coordinated and sustained distributed system of systems, has several functional components: * To address identified common user requirements; * To acquire observational data; * To process data into useful products; * To exchange, disseminate, and archive shared data; * To monitor performance against the defined requirements and intended benefits. © GEO Secretariat
GEONETCast GEONETCast • A presentation was given on GEONETCast by EUMETSAT and NOAA at GEO-II in DEC. 2005. • GEONETCast is designed to disseminate space-based, air-borne and in situ data, metadata and products to diverse communities. © GEO Secretariat
GEONETCast 2006 Work Plan • Task CB-06-04, a high priority capacity building area task under monitoring of the GEO Architecture and Data Committee. * Demo of GEONETCast, as built upon EUMETCast, in 2006 * Development of GEONETCast initiative for GEO community participation, including data products for and user involvement from all nine societal benefit areas. © GEO Secretariat
GEONETCast Outlines (from 2006 Work Plan) • GEOSS requires capacity for all GEO participants and users to access, transmit and exchange data. • Beginning with an assessment of current data transfer and dissemination systems, and building on identified user requirements, GEO will study the concept of a “GEONETCast”. • Initially, GEONETCast will use existing commercial telecommunications infrastructure to allow for the broadcast of earth observation data streams in the future. It should provide on-demand access to observation data, as well as the collection of data from isolated sites and observatories. © GEO Secretariat
Progress and Present Status EUMETSAT, NOAA and WMO further defined their understanding of how the GEONETCast concept could be developed. Coverage ( Version 1: EUMETSAT+ NOAA) • Europe and Africa ( existing ) • North, Central and South America ( readily available ) Services ( Version 1: EUMETCast+ NOAA) • Mainly meteorological data and derived products • Mainly Environmental satellite data Technical Features • User reception station is user friendly and cost effective © GEO Secretariat
Relationship to the Committees • GEONETCast is a capacity building area task, still it is ruled by the Plenary and overseen by the Architecture and Data Committee. • GEONETCast, like any tasks in the work plan, will be implemented by GEO Members and Participating Organizations, coordinated by the Secretariat and discussed in the GEO Committees. • Whilst not involved in management or implementation of tasks the GEO committees are expected to have a significant involvement to support the tasks. CBC, Outreach and UIC can help and should work with © GEO Secretariat
Relationship to the Committees ( this part need to be discussed with committees) • ADC will make recommendations on the structure and design of GEONETCast system. • UIC will support the task team to identify users requirement on the function of GEONETCast and with data providers to make data sets and products available. • CBC will support the task team to address the specific needs of the developing countries for receiving and providing data and products. © GEO Secretariat
Next Steps • Building on identified user requirements, a round table meeting of data providers, GEONETCast operator and users across divers SBAs is requested by some members to develop a clear cooperation relations about the data collection, processing, exchange and dissemination. © GEO Secretariat
Next Steps • To discuss with all stakeholders who are able to contribute to GEONETCast services to ensure a common understanding of the way forward, refine concept, and develop full master schedule with blueprints which describes critical steps to achieve the outcomes. © GEO Secretariat
Questions and Discussion Q1: Coverage of all parts of world, for example, Asia Pacific region, how and when? © GEO Secretariat
Questions and Discussion Q2: Data collection of all SBAs, What is the structure of data collection system for GEONETCast, how and when? Initiative for GEO community participation, including data products for and user involvement from all nine societal benefit areas. © GEO Secretariat
Q3: What is the system’s relation with existing and planning data dissemination and collection systems, like WMO GTS (WIS) and IGDDS, ESA DDS, NASA EOS, Japan Sentinel-Asia, etc? Q4: Will the task team develop any implementation plan or master schedule with blueprints? Questions and Discussion GEONETCast contributors WMO WIS ESA DDS Others NASA EOS EUMETCast © GEO Secretariat
Questions and Discussion Q5: Will the system develop with enhancement of internet, and how? Q6: What is the mechanism to guaranty the operational services? Q7: How to meet real-time data users’ requirement? Q8: How to encourage developing countries’ participation to facilitate capacity building and identify users requirement? Q9: What is the expected outcomes of this workshop and the demonstration of EUMETCast? © GEO Secretariat
Other Issues • 2007-2009 Work Plan Development? It is expected that this task will be continue and developed into a large and high-attractive activity, and GEONETCast will keep developing with enhancement of its capabilities to demonstrate wider area user and SBAs. • A demonstration and group discussion as a side event of GEO CB workshop in Brazil on 29-31 May? © GEO Secretariat
Thanks for Attention With the target to provide easy access to as much data and as many people as possible, the GEONETCast is crucial to achieving GEO value, a system of systems, and high-lighting the GEOSS concept in a concrete way at the very beginning stage. © GEO Secretariat
