GEONETCast GEONETCast - delivering environmental data to users world wide Gordon Bridge EUMETSAT gordon.bridge@eumetsat.int
GEONETCast – what is it? • A network of dissemination systems providing global delivery of environmental data to Users worldwide; • It is a Capacity Building task of GEO which reports to its Architecture and Data Committee; • Environmental data can be satellite, in-situ or airborne related to any of the 9 GEOSS Societal Benefit Areas;
GEONETCast and GEO Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS) GEONETCast is an important component
GEONETCast – what is it? • Based on Internet Protocol over DVB (sat TV) satellite infrastructure; • Highly scalable infrastructure using open standards and commercially available broadcast platforms; • Allows the usage of off-the shelf, inexpensive equipment for reception.
GEONETCast – the systems • EUMETCast, operated by EUMETSAT, providing coverage of Europe, Middle East, Africa and the Americas; • FENGYUNCast, operated by CMA, providing coverage of Asia/pacific region; • GEONETCast Americas, operated by NOAA, providing coverage of the Americas;
GEONETCast – Implementation Group • The Implementation Group currently consists of CMA, EUMETSAT, NOAA and WMO. Russia has been invited to join; • The operational GEONETCast Implementation Group is responsible for managing the demonstration and implementation activities. • It is based on a flexible arrangement which is currently open to additional infrastructure providers and operators. • Hence constitution of this group could be adjusted to reflect additional contributors and major participants as the GEONETCast demonstration and implementation evolves.
GEONETCast – Standards • - Overview • GEONETCast consists of a number of major components: • • Existing dissemination infrastructure; • • Data Providers/Sources; • • The global environmental User community. • The three regional systems are seen as the minimum required to establish global geographic coverage. Should additional regional systems be made available, the GEONETCast concept is flexible and scalable enough to easily accommodate them.

GEONETCast – Data Exchange • As part of the GEONETCast design, links have been established between Network Centres: • The NOAA data providers - EUMETSAT link uses the Internet; • The CMA-NOAA link is yet to be put in place; • The CMA-EUMETSAT link uses the RMDCN with Internet back-up and can be considered technically operational;
GEONETCast – Product Navigator • The Product Navigator has been developed to give Users information on environmental products; • Target is to use it as a Data Discovery tool for all products available on GEONETCast; • The navigator is currently hosted on the EUMETSAT web site; • It can be found at http://www.eumetsat.int/products
Product Navigator • It is a file-based, fully-interactive and searchable guide to GEONETCast global data offerings. • GEOSS-compliant, linkable to other data sets and projects • Offerings organized by GEO Societal Benefit Areas, provider, region, training resource, etc. • Available online and over the GEONETCast satellite broadcast
GEONETCast – Product Navigator SOME EXAMPLES OF CONTENT • Imagery and products; Meteosat imagery in various channels, ASCAT soil moisture, ocean winds, SST, Land surface temp., sea ice, aerosol, volcanic ash, AMVs surface emissivity, long wave fluxes, meteosat products, • RETIM will be on EUMETCast • Third Party Prods; MODIS fire prods, TAMSAT prods, SAWS RII and SWFDP prods, EC-FP7 projects – AIDA, DevCoCast, • To come; fire detection/monitoring, risk of fire, veg products, evapotranspiration prods, hydrology prods, precip prods, • MIA-VITA, AEGOS, EAMNET, EUGENE, geoland2, • And….and….and…. • Products Working Group established by WMO after African user forum in Accra. • Recommend additional prods, • Still capacity but not unlimited – there is an associated cost!!!!
Global Outreach User Engagement Each region works directly with its Users; In Europe there are currently about 2010 EUMETCast stations deployed; In Africa, there are about 115 EUMETCast stations deployed – expected to grow in 2010 with evolution of AMESD; In the Asia/Pacific region, there are about 200 FENGYUNCast stations deployed; In the Americas there are about 60 stations deployed
User Engagement • User base is growing, widening from traditional meteorological users to other groups – e.g. education, government agencies, SBAs. • New capacity building and user engagement efforts will increase involvement of new user groups. • Announcement of opportunity planned, i.e. outreach in previously-underserved regions: Africa, South/Central America, Asia.
Training Channel • Satellite broadcast “sub-channel” devoted to education and training materials • Increase capacity of users to utilize GNC products • Include COMET/Met-Ed, EUMETSAT, WMO offerings, courses, lectures, etc. • Educational exchange and distance learning, university and school links.
Training Concept GEONETCast could support 2 types of training methods: Delivery of training material in support of self-learning activities; Targeted delivery of training material to be used during a training course. Relevant training material still in the process of being identified; Some course material providers have been identified– further potential training material providers are invited to get in contact.
Training Delivery (1) The Training Channel is planned to be supported by each GNC operator (CMA, EUMETSAT, NOAA); It will involve a specific setup of the dissemination systems and data exchange links; Could evolve to the continuous distribution of Training Libraries.
Training Delivery (2) For self-learning, training material could be openly available to the GEONETCast User community; For targeted course delivery, the training material would be delivered to the target audience prior to the course; Training material would be received on a GEONETCast station, then accessed via LAN or USB disks or memory sticks, for example.
Hazard Alert Channel • Broadcast weather and environmental event alerts • Alerts using Common Alerts Protocol (CAP) standards. • Being tested using alerts concerning volcano ash clouds (high impact hazard for aviation)
Future Plans • Regional Data Centers Interoperability enhanced • Increased and more diverse user base in the Americas, Africa and Asia • Add government, educational institutions, general public to user base • Further develop Training Channel concept • Hazard and Alert Channel development • Product Navigator enhancements
Open Issues The GNC capability is proven and operational but….. What training resources could be exchanged……. How to organise this exchange with minimum human intervention…… A NOAA/EUMETSAT “white paper” on how the operation of the GNC training channel might evolve over time is being developed.
