CDC protects and improves health in your state and community. • More than 70% of CDC’s funding is distributed to state and local health departments, universities and other key organizations in all 50 states and around the world • CDC empowers the public with vital tools so they can protect their own health and the health of their families

  7. CDC and its partners determine the ultimate success of homeland security. • CDC connects state and local health, recognizing disease patterns and helping states respond more quickly and effectively • CDCfield staff are assigned to all 50 states and more than 50 countries

  8. Saving Lives and Protecting People CDC’s global disease detection network responded to 535 disease outbreaks and detected 51 new pathogens from 2006 to 2010. CDC helped investigate more than 200 multi-state foodborne outbreaks in 2010, including E. coli and Salmonella.

  9. Saving Lives and Protecting People CDC’s Emergency Operations Center serves as a 24/7 central command for public health responses to emergencies like Hurricane Katrina, H1N1 and the Deepwater Horizon explosion.

  10. Saving Lives and Protecting People CDC maintains a Strategic National Stockpile that distributes lifesaving vaccines, medicines and suppliesfollowing a public health crisis.

  11. Saving Money Through Prevention More than three-quarters of the nation’s healthcare spending is on preventable diseases like diabetes, heart disease and stroke. CDC invests in programsproven to prevent these diseases and reduce healthcare costs. 75% of U.S. healthcare spending is on preventable disease $1.9 trillion

  12. Saving Money Through Prevention Regular childhood vaccinations prevent 20 million cases of disease, avert 42,000 deaths and save nearly $70 billion. CDC′s guidelines for preventing infections in healthcare facilities save 4,500 lives each year and $3.3 billion.
