The nature of Microbiology • Microbiologist get to study the characteristics and growth of Microbes. • Microbes are the tiny little creatures. A single gram of soil can contain up to 1 billion of these. • Scientist identified less than one percent of their species, which include fungi, algae, viruses, and parasites.
Working Conditions • Microbiologist work in colleges, laboratory, and on field work. • Most of the time the work environment is comfortable but on occasion they will do field work which can include harsh weather which can make for an uncomfortable setting. • They also have to be careful; because they are working with disease spreading organism they have to make sure that they are taking the proper precaution to not get the disease.
Training/Education • The minimum requirement to be a microbiologist is a bachelors degree. But you get can much further if you have a masters degree. • A PhD is required for most academic and senior research positions. • Must research position's include a masters degree which will take 1-2 years to get. Most people spend their time study a certain pathway like immunology or virology.
Job Outlook • For job security it is a pretty stable job if you work for the government. • If you work separately in a laboratory for a separate company your job is more risky a possible chance of only working for them for only 5-10 years
Earnings • As a just graduate earnings are up to $26.14 an hour with a yearly earning of $54,380 • As a Median earnings are up to $32.40 an hour yearly earning of $67,400 • As an Experienced Microbiologist they make $36.76 an hour. With an over total of 76,460 a year. • If you have a PhD you can make $116,000 a year
Uses of Technology in Career • Microbiology does a great deal with technology. If they didn’t have their technology than they wouldn’t even be able to do their job. • Tools they use can be certain dyes so they can see the microbes, they use a number of different microscopes such as Atomic force microscopy, Raman micro spectroscopy, and Scanning electrochemical microscopy.
Summary • All in all Microbiology is a tough job but it is worth it. • They make good money • Their job is overall secured • Training an education is a bit of work but hard work never hurt anyone
