Habakkuk 3:17-19 • [17] Though the fig tree should not blossom, • nor fruit be on the vines, • the produce of the olive fail • and the fields yield no food, • the flock be cut off from the fold • and there be no herd in the stalls, • [18] yet I will rejoice in the LORD; • I will take joy in the God of my salvation. • [19] GOD, the Lord, is my strength; • he makes my feet like the deer's; • he makes me tread on my high places. • To the choirmaster: with stringed instruments.
Where the Wrestling Begins • The Complaint (1:2-4) How long will I cry for help without an answer? • God Answers and Tells of His Plan to chastise this wayward people. The answer includes sending in a bitter and hasty nation, The Chaldeans, a dreaded and fearsome people, a cruel and blood thirsty enemy.
Taking Encouragement from Past Events • Perseverance and comfort are achieved by recalling God’s word. Habakkuk had heard of the Lords great saving acts, and then he recounts them here in 3:3-15. • Receiving grace through God’s word. Ultimate satisfaction is had in the giver of good things, not the things themselves. (Key point)
The Just Shall Live by His Faith [2:4] “Behold, his soul is puffed up; it is not upright within him, but the righteous shall live by his faith. • The biblical meaning of faith is trust. A person who lives by real faith puts their trust in Jesus. The proud on the other hand, trust in themselves. • Romans 1:17 • Galatians 3:11 • Ephesians 2:8 • Hebrews 10:38-39
Facing the Inevitable • When it becomes clear there is no escaping the coming ferocity of the Chaldean enemy, his entire being trembled. (Habakkuk 3:16) • The Divine Partnership of Suffering and Joy “Though He slay me, I will hope in Him” (Job13:15)
We are to be ‘more than conquerors’, instead of merely exercising self-control with the aid of an iron will. We are to rejoice in the Lord and to joy in the God of our salvation. Such a time is test of our Christian profession. If we are not then more than conquerors we are failing as Christians. — D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones
