Global Game Jam 2010 Savanna scrum postmortem
Hi I’m Andy! • Freelance Programmer & Designer • I love games! • Obviously
Team Fuschia • Jenny Lees • Mic Couture • Brian Doyle • Andrew Eiche • Daniel Batson • Jeremy Dale • Kurtis Smith (Not Pictured)
Savanna Scrum What Went Right
Strong Central Idea • Core idea was simple • Two teams of players will attempt to push a ball into the other teams goal. At any time the players may switch teams. • Implements the 2 themes • Able to get the team working quickly
Art style, direction, production • High Quality Output • Very independent • Quickly adapted to our pipeline • Even though it was constantly changing
Work Environment • Tools and Workstations on site • Excellent Hosts • FREE FOOD!
Savanna Scrum What Went Wrong
Torque X, Torque 3D, Torque X • Torque X is not ready for production • Torque 3D is missing important features • Commit to core tech by the ¼ (12Hrs.) mark
High Ambition • Designing features before the core design was ready • Resisted change to the original design • Once you pass the ½ mark (24Hrs.) must compromise / redesign
Network Multiplayer • Tricky to design • Server – Client, P2P, Authoritative • Hard to test • Painful to debug
After GGJ • Created a rough prototype of the original core design • Unity Engine (2.6) • ~35 Hrs. • Code, Level Design, Sound Effects, UI
Conclusions • Diversity is your best asset • Have a timeline in place before working • 12hr Tools lockdown; 24hr design lockdown; etc. • Met some great people • Ready for next year!
