Introduce children to part 1 of ‘Captain Plank’s Pirate Adventure’ Spend time reading part 1 together and familiarising children with the story’s structure and events. 1. Adapt the model story After children have learned to recall part 1, have them explore part 2 and change key elements of Captain Plank’s Pirate Adventure. Children can change their main character’s choices each day of the week. 2. Use the story mat resources to aid retelling and recalling Use image and key word resources to prompt children’s memories. Pupils can arrange the images on the whiteboard or use printed versions. 2. Write a pirate tale Have the children write their own pirate tale using the blank writing frames provided. Encourage pupils to draw pictures of their story’s beginning, middle and end before they begin writing.

  5. Once there was a poor young pirate named Captain Plank.He lived with his parrot Nelson in a tiny, run-down red shack near the sea.

  6. On Monday, Captain Plank decided to head off in search of pirate treasure.But then he realised he didn’t look like a pirate.

  7. So he rummaged in his cupboard and found a big black hat. “Arrgh”, he said. “Now I feel more like a pirate.”

  8. On Tuesday, CaptainPlank was nearly ready tostart his adventure. But then he realisedhe had another problem.He didn’t have a ship.

  9. So he looked around the harbour and stole a speedy ship with three sails while no one was looking. He named his ship the Flying Dragon.Then he was ready to set sail!

  10. On Wednesday, Captain Plankpulled up the anchor, raisedthe sail and set out to sea.Nelson and the Captain werehaving a great time. They sailed so far out that theycould not see land anymore. But then Captain Plank realisedthey were lost.

  11. So he ran into the ship’s cabin. He searched high and low until he found a map to help them on their way. Then Captain Plank and Nelson weren’t so lost. [Insert picture of map]

  12. On Thursday, Captain Plank wanted to scare other ships with his fearsome Jolly Roger flag. But he realised some sneaky pirates had climbed the mast and stolen it in the night.

  13. So he ran to the bow of theship and found a new flagand some paint. Then he made an even scarier Jolly Roger, with a skull and crossbones on it.Captain Plank flew his new flag with pride.

  14. On Friday, Captain Plankarrived at a faraway treasureisland.He realised the island’streasure was buried on thebeach and would be hard tofind.

  15. So he dug down deep in the sand with all his might and found some precious pieces-of-eight. Then Captain Plank wasn’t such a poor pirate anymore.

  16. On Saturday and Sunday, the Captain and Nelson had a big party on the island and invited all their pirate crew.

  17. THE END They celebrated Captain Plank’s new riches and sang Nelson’s favourite pirate song…“When I was oneI sucked my thumbThe day I went to sea.I jumped aboard a pirate shipAnd the captain said to me…”
