Faculty Senate Report Sept 19, 2013 Resolution Whereas Professor Balakrishnan has served the Missouri University of Science and Technology Faculty Senate since 2011 as President-Elect, and President; Whereas, as an Officer of the Faculty Senate, Professor Balakrishnan has demonstrated consistent good humor, hard work, considered judgment, thoughtfulness and dedication to shared governance in these positions; Whereas, Professor Balakrishnan's leadership skills have helped the Faculty Senate and the campus succeed through strategic planning; Whereas, Professor Balakrishnan has maintained a friendly, collegial and consistently positive attitude at all times; Be it resolved that the Faculty Senate of the Missouri University of Science and Technology does hereby sincerely thank Professor Balakrishnan for every job well done and wish him continued success in his future endeavors. Adopted this 19th day of September, 2013, at the meeting of the Missouri University of Science and Technology Faculty Senate.
Faculty Senate Report September 19, 2013 • Intercampus Faculty Council: NR, will meet next week • Board of Curators meeting: • $4.3 billion net assets (our retirement, endowments) remains healthy, 5.3% growth last year. • Promoting intellectual property, let companies own patents. S&T noted as good model, adopted last year. • $22.1 million in new strategic planning funds • + $48.5 million match (of which $25 million reallocated) • Will ask State for $1.2 million towards new Experimental Mine Building

The effective date for this amendment is January 1, 2014.”

Office of Undergraduate Studies 2013 Curators’ Teaching Summit, Sponsored by CERTI • “Emerging Student Issues in the Classroom,” featuring the Curators’ Teaching Professors • Noon meetings, Sept. 16, Oct. 16 and Nov. 11 with lunch provided. LEAD • For the first time ever Chem 2 (759 students) will offer a learning center. It will meet in TJ Hall. • LEAD tutoring and learning centers were initiated by the second week of the semester. • We launched our first-ever “On Line Learning Center” in Chem 1. • We are arranging a “LEAD Showcase” on Nov 12-13 for fellow UM faculty/administrators.
Office of Graduate Studies Record Graduate Enrollment Growth: • Graduate enrollment rose from 1414 in FS 2007 to 1927 in FS2013 -- a 36.28% increase. • The PhD student enrollment rose from 344 in FS2007 to 545 in FS2013 – a 58.43% increase. Note: The FS2013 numbers are based on 2nd week data.

Office of International Affairs • International Student Enrollment • FS13 set a record for incoming new students 380 (a 50% increase over FS12) • Intensive English Program • 123 students are currently enrolled • 49 full-time and 74 part-time • Countries represented include Brazil, China, Colombia, East Timor, Iran, Iraq, Japan, Kuwait, Libya, Saudi Arabia, South Korea and Thailand • Non degree Students • International Affairs hosted a scavenger hunt for Brazil Scientific Mobility Program students and exchange students (non-degree). The international students were matched with American Students and sent out to explore the campus. Twenty-nine students participated.
Office of International Affairs • Celebration of Nations is in full-swing! • Outreach programs have started in the local community • Organizing committee meeting regularly to ensure a great event • All campus and community members are invited to the 4th annual event on September 28th • The program begins with a parade that will march from the campus to Rolla Street, 6th Street and Pine Street to the downtown bandshell area • International Idol try-outs are Sept 4th • Celebration of Nations tee-shirts are now available and can be purchased at the Missouri S&T bookstore for $10 – $12. Camels are returning September 28!
