Interesting Statistics • Every Seven Minutes, there is an incidence of bullying • Adults intervene 4% of the time • Peers intervene 11% of the time • A survey of 15,686 students grade 6-10 revealed that 9% had bullied someone at least once a week and 8% reported being victims of a bully that frequently • By the age of 24, 60% of former school bullies had already been convicted at least once on a criminal charge
What is Bullying? • Core Attributes • Intended to harm someone else • Usually occurs repeatedly • Involves a ‘stronger’ person targeting someone perceived as weaker in some way • Males tend to resort to physical bullying; females rely more on indirect methods (spreading rumors, belittling, etc.)
Different Types of Bullying • Psychological • Verbal • Physical • Electronic
Why do Kids Engage in Bullying Behavior? • Pre-disposed to aggression? • It’s a learned behavior • To show strength and avoid being a victim themselves • As a means of controlling others • As a way to express their anger • As a means of revenge • To act out problems at home
How are YOU Promoting Bullying Behavior? • By recognizing and Rewarding certain groups and not others • By giving special attention to ‘standouts’ like athletes and scholars • By not confronting concerning behavior, even at home
Combating Bullying • Address the bully and the behavior, not just the victim • Make one victim stronger, the bully will find another • Implement prevention programs that encourage parents, teachers, and other bystanders to report bullying instead of overlooking them • Find ways to help reduce aggression at home
