Assignment 1: Document Design • Software: Word • Task: • Use specific features in Word (and others of your choosing) to create a document format appropriate for a specific goal. • Due: Wednesday, by the start of class
Style and Paragraph Style • Definitions: • Style – a named collection of formats • Paragraph style – a style that applies to all text in a paragraph (text between two paragraph markers). • Question: What are the benefits and drawbacks of making use styles (particularly the pre-defined styles of heading 1…9 and capture)?
Styles: Demo How do you: • Determine what style is in use • Format text according to a style • Modify a style • Create new style • Understand why changing one style (particularly normal) can affect other styles • Make styles work for you – inserting a table of contents (figures, tables)
Inserting Objects into Word • Object: A unit within Word that are treated as a whole, have properties as a whole • Framing question: Based on your prior experiences (and your imagination), what are some of the types of objects you can insert into a Word document? For these objects, what are some of the parameters you might change to format the object?
Strategies for Learning Software • Identify major concepts • Cruise the interface/menus • Right click
Submitting via E-Portfolio • What is E-Portfolio? • New tool for teaching/learning at UW • Users can a) collect artifacts, b) reflect on artifacts, and c) publish collections in portfolios • Has both class use and personal use • Why E-Portfolio? • Another technology learning experience • Fits needs for this class, solutions and annotations • Personally good for students (you could create other portfolios)
