  1. Opening Orientation Spring 2012 Welcome to theTechnical Communication Lab

  2. Technical Communication Lab: TCL • The TCL is a fee-based lab. • Only currently enrolled technical communication students may use.

  3. Lab Hours* Monday to Thursday 8 am to 10 pm Friday 8 am to 4 pm Saturday Closed Sunday Closed *Lab is closed to individuals and there will be no printing during finals week! You will also have NO access to the scratch drive.

  4. General Policies • Leave all food, drinks, tobacco products, bikes and skateboards outside the lab (there is a bike rack in front of the building). • Only lab staff are allowed behind the front desk.

  5. Virus Disclaimer We do our best to safeguard each computer from viruses, but we cannot guarantee that all computers are virus-free. If you detect a virus, please inform us so we can clean the computers. Thank you!

  6. Property Rights The University of North Texas owns all materials stored on its computers. You are legally responsible for the content of these materials. You can be prosecuted for any illegal or offensive e-mails, documents, graphics or websites.

  7. Computer Information • Save often. • Please leave the computer on. • Any files or information saved to the desktop will be deleted daily. • Computers auto-shutdown at 10 p.m. • Making changes to a computer in any way is in violation of UNT policy and can result in disciplinary action.

  8. Removable Drives Available Devices • R/RW Compact Disk • USB Flash Drive* *USB Flash Drives are sturdy, reusable alternatives to CDs.

  9. Flash Drives • Scan your flash drives before opening them on the lab computers. • Backup your files • DO NOT print from the flash drive. • Save the file to the computer, then print from that file.

  10. Scratch Drive - P: The Shared Drive • Use the scratch drive to store team files and access class work. • You will have access to the scratch drive in the lab.

  11. UNT Computing Cloud (The Cloud) Microsoft is now providing Office Live applications in EagleConnect. These are web-based (cloud) versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Please go to http://web3.unt.edu/benchmarks/ issues/2010/07/campus-computing-news for information and usage instructions.

  13. Working at Home • Microsoft Works. • You cannot open Works files in the lab. It is best to save your documents as: • Word Document (.doc) • Rich Text Format (.RTF) • PDF (for printing purposes only)

  14. Working at Home: Part 2 • Fonts you use at home may not be available in the lab. • Talk to a lab tutor for assistance if you would like to embed a font in your document. • Documents created away from the lab will be reformatted when they are opened in the lab. • The printer installed on your computer determines the format of the document.

  15. Working at Home: Part 3 • You may not call the lab from home and ask for help. • You must be inside the TCL in order for a tutor to help you.

  16. Printing Procedures • Look for your printout at the front desk. • We place your printout under your Computer Number • Your computer number is located on top of your computer. • Be patient if your printout is not immediately ready.

  17. Printing Procedures • The TCL supports only letter, legal, tabloid, and poster size paper. • Selecting a custom size paper will result in improper printing.

  18. Supported Programs • Microsoft Word 2010 • Adobe InDesign CS5 • Adobe Dreamweaver CS5 • Adobe Photoshop CS5 • These are the programs for which we provide support. If you’d like to use other software, we cannot give assistance!

  19. Macs and Other Foreign Machines • MAC users: we cannot guarantee that your documents will be formatted correctly when brought into the TCL. • If you use a Mac at home, when working on assignments in the TCL, click on the File tab and click Convert, as shown below:

  21. General Suggestions: Part 2 • There are NO make-up orientations! • Attendance is required for all orientations and tutors do not give private lessons.

  22. Policy Statements In the front of your textbook, tear out the TCL policy statement. If you do not have this page in your book, ask a tutor for a copy. You must fill out this form in order to have access to the Technical Communication Lab!

  23. Policy Statements • Final Exams • The lab is closed to individuals • The scratch drive is NOT available • No color printing • No binding • The teacher must arrive before a student can enter the lab to take their final.
