Duties • Read & analyze scripts • Research! • Produce costume plot and preliminary sketches • Work closely with the production and design teams • Produce drawings of original designs and/or incorporate ready-made garments, shoes, accessories • Develop & implement a budget • Prepare & oversee overall production schedules • Hire & supervise costuming staff and suppliers • Develop patterns, if necessary • Purchase materials or ready-made items, on budget • Attend fittings and rehearsals
Education • Minimum 2-year degree in fashion or costume design • Preferred BA in fine arts, set design, theatre design, history, fashion or costume design • Advanced degrees may be required for some positions • Relevant work experience
Abilities • Able to accurately analyze scripts • Excellent research skills • Superb designing and dressmaking skills • Solid understanding of textiles, accessories • Eye for detail, color, shape • Understanding of body types, appropriate styling • Ability to work within a strict budget • Ability to meet deadlines • Excellent communication skills

Salary • Commensurate with experience • Entry level: $500/production • Experienced level: $20,000/production • Top level: $150,000/production • NY average: $81,000 • LA average: $65,000
