BIG 5 • Topic: Tattoos in our society • Focus: Evolution of tattoos and how they are viewed. • Method: Content analysis and interviews • Goals: To try and change the negative stigma that comes with tattoos • Target: People in the business and corporate world as well as tattooed people.
ORIGINAL RESEARCH REPORT 1 • Content analysis of Rolling Stone, Muscle & Fitness, and GQ. • Content analysis on the ads in the magazine and how they portray tattoos. • Compare the types of magazine to demographics and masculinity.
Results • GQ had the lowest amount of tattoos because the high end demographic that they appeal to. • Rolling Stone had the second highest due to the rock n roll and rap subculture. • Muscle & Fitness had the most relates to Rolling Stone with the subcultures just this one being fighters and lifters.
Original research report 2 • Interviews: • Interviewed five different people ranging from 18-48. • All have different occupations. • Asked them how their tattoos have affected their social life and work life, if they regret getting any, do people act differently to them etc.
Results • Even moms and dads are starting to get tattoos and not worrying about the stigma. • Has changed both social and work life but not for better or worse. • In the production offices tattoos are almost encouraged and never looked down upon. • Even the head of an English department at a small private school has more problems with hair length over tattoos.
Final overview • Tattoos are starting to become normal but will never be able to lose the negative stigma. • Most aspects of society accept tattoos except for older generations and the business and corporate world. • As the older generation moves on hopefully tattoos will start to become normal and lose their stigma.
