Components of Fitness Learning outcomes: Describe and explain the different components of Health Related Fitness.
FITNESS? • A measure of the body’s ability to complete activities for everyday life efficiently and effectively.
Components of HRF. • There are 5 components of fitness. • Cardio vascular endurance • Muscular endurance • Strength • Body Composition • Flexibility
Cardiovascular Endurance. • Known as Stamina • Cardio – heart vascular – blood vessel • Ability of the heart to pump blood and deliver O2 where it is needed. • Most team sports require a high level of cardio-vascular endurance. • It is the most important fitness component
Muscular Endurance • The ability of the muscles to contract over a long period of time without becoming fatigued/tired.
Strength. • The maximum force that can be developed within a muscle or group of muscles during a single max contraction. • 3 types of strength – static, dynamic and explosive static – held position explosive – 1 sharp movement. dynamic – repeated and supporting the body
Body Composition. • Is the proportion of bone, muscle and fat within the body. • A person’s percentage of body fat is determined by heredity, nutrition, and level of activity. • A certain amount of body fat is essential for good health; high or low amounts can be unhealthy. • Skin fold thickness is one way to measure body composition. • Body weight is not a good measurement of body composition.
Flexibility. • The greatest range of movement at a joint • Reduces muscle injury and allows for a full range of movement. • Flexibility is affected by a number of factors: • Sex – Females tend to be more flexible than males. • Age – Flexibility decreases with age. • Warm-up – A muscle will stretch further after a warm-up. • Flexibility is one of the easiest components to improve.
Using an activity of your choice state TWO aspects of HRF that may be improved by training. Explain how this would improve performance in your activity. • Eg. Badminton • HRF – improved flexibility • Improved because able to stretch further and reach more shots.
