A Seminal Work: Sociologists Glaser and Strauss (1967), The Discovery of Grounded Theory • Thought grounded theory could provide “predictions, explanations, interpretations, and applications” (p. 1) • Veered away from verifying “grand” theory (p. 10) • Could generate new theories • Saw theory as a “process”: “…an ever-developing entity, not as a perfected process” (p. 32)
An Example: Care of Dying Patients • Theoretical category, “social loss,”: Those with high social loss received better care than those with low social loss (“lower-class Negroes often are neglected on city hospital emergency wards” ) (Glaser & Strauss, 1967, p. 24)
Questions in Grounded Theory Are: • Exploratory • Hypotheses generating • Must be framed “in a manner that provides the investigator with sufficient flexibility and freedom to explore a topic in some depth” (Corbin & Strauss, 2008, p. 25)
Seeks to Generate Substantive (not Grand) Theory • Refers to specific “everyday-world situations” • Is specific and is therefore more useful “ to practice”(Merriam, 1998, p. 17).
Morrell (2008) describes his use of grounded theory in Critical Literacy and Urban Youth: • Constant comparative method • “…a dialectic interaction between existing theories and contemporary experience.” • “grounded theorists believe that knowledge is created through actual experience in the world.” (p. 8).
