Grounded Theory : Looking Ahead Jordan Wright Final Reflection EDU 895 July 12, 2013
Taking The Dive • Ph.D. programs can make you question your path: The pressure is on to decide what to do, how you’re going to do it, how you’ll defend it, how you’ll… Survive When I thought about taking a third research class…
Day One • Dr. Yuknis announced: • We will do a GTM project on ‘jobs’ • In addition to writing a sample proposal. • Being summer and all, My natural reaction:
Relief in sight… • I was happy to learn it was not lecture driven. Like some classes that shall not be named. • It was not like other classes in which certain professors made me feel like…
The Group • I learned the most from interacting with the group • Credibility can be powerful with peer reviewers • Just when I thought I knew pretty much everything about the Deaf community, I realized how much diversity exists within this small group. • Then I thought about the diversity that’s going to affect how I tackle my dissertation…
And then there was coding. • Words, words, more words! • There’s a code for everything. • There has to be an app for this.
Getting my second wind • At first, coding seemed like a big maze • I remember feeling overwhelmed with all the data • I saw contrasts instead of similarities But I got my second wind and realized Ph.D. student/Boot Camp = Same thing.
After the QualStorm Passed.. • I returned to class with a newfound sense of optimism and fresh eyes for GTM :
GTM = Confidence • I started to understand patterns and triangulation • I started to better understand how I might go about framing the groundwork for my dissertation. • Confidence is Sexy.
Thinking about the future • As a result of this class I feel: • GTM really is the best fit for what I want to do • Especially since everyone *ahem* seems to have an opinion about Deaf-Blindness in general:
Looking Forward • The dissertation seems like less of a myth • How I imagine walking into my dissertation defense:
